Unakoti , Tripura

Unakoti is an administrative district in the state of Tripura in northeastern India . It is the least populated district of Tripura ,with fourth highest literacy rate . The District has a total of four sub divisions and two blocks . The District was created in 2012 , by bifurcating the North Tripura district with its headquarter in kailashahar 

why Unakoti is called Unakoti ?

The name Unakoti means one short of one crore and it is derived from local folktales . It is said that one crore Gods and Goddesses were on their way to Kashi and stopped in Unakoti for the night . Shiva asked all the gods and goddesses to be awake by sunrise and continue the journey.

What is Unakoti also known as ?
Unakoti ,also known as the Angkor Wat of the Northeast , is vying for the UNESCO world heritage tag , and both the government  ASI are working to pressure lakhs of Shaivite rock carvings , figures ,and images of gods and goddesses at the site.
 

Unakoti is known for its vast collection of sculptures, which are believed to number in the thousands. As per the name, there should be exactly 99,99,999 sculptures.  The sculptures depict various Hindu deities, mythological figures, and celestial beings.
The fascinating story of Unakoti is related to Lord Shiva. According to legends, Lord Shiva had spent a night here in this very spot on his way to Kashi. He was accompanied by 9999999 gods and goddesses, which is one less than a crore, hence the name Unakoti, meaning one less than a crore
